Southern California University of Health Sciences (known as SCU or SCUHS) is a private, not-for-profit institute of higher education founded in 1911, with a focus on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Its 38-acre campus is located in Whittier, California.[1] SCUHS is home to the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. The campus is also home to the School of Professional Studies and a complimentary Integrated Science Program.[2] SCUHS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).[3]
As of 2013 the school enrolls 473 full-time students in its graduate programs.
History
The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic was founded on October 18, 1911 by Dr. Charles Cale and his wife Linnie Cale.[4] The first graduating class had only three students, and classes were taught in the Cale's home.[5] By 1912 the school moved to an Opera House in Los Angeles and had grown to 113 students, and by 1981 the college moved to its current location in Whittier, CA. LACC was first accredited in 1993, and was the only chiropractic college accredited by the WASC at the time.[6]
Academics
The University's College of Chiropractic is also known as the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. The chiropractic program is based on the semester system and is 10 trimesters long.[7] LACC also offers two, two-year-long full-time chiropractic residency programs, one in Sports Medicine and one in Diagnostic Imaging.[8] Both the Sports Medicine and Diagnositic Imaging Residency requires participation in a two-year program. The Doctor of Chiropractic degree program of SCU is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE)[9] and the California Board of Chiropractic Examiners.[10]
SCUHS is also home to the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CAOM). The Masters of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program of SCU is a 9 trimester program fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM),[11] which is the recognized accrediting agency for the approval acupuncture and oriental medicine programs. It is also approved by the California Acupuncture Board.[12]
In addition to LACC and the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, SCUHS is home to two Ayurvedic certificate programs: a wellness educator program and an Ayurvedic practitioner program. The Ayurvedic practitioner program[13] is supported by the California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine[14] and the National Ayurvedic Medical Association.[15] Currently there are no official licenses in the United States to practice Ayurveda.[16]
The school also offers Certification in Massage Therapy and Continuing Education Credits in Massage Therapy.[17]
Location
SCU is located in the suburb of Whittier, 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and bordering Orange County.
