Purulia I (community development block) is an administrative division in Purulia Sadar East subdivision of Purulia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Kenda, Purulia Muffasil, Arsha and Purulia Town police stations serve this block. Headquarters of this block is at Bhatbandh.[1][2]
History
Jaina Bhagavati-Sutra of 5th century AD mentions that Purulia was one of the sixteen mahajanapadas and was a part of the kingdom known as Vajra-bhumi in ancient times. In 1833, Manbhum district was carved out of Jungle Mahals district, with headquarters at Manbazar. In 1838, the headquarters was transferred to Purulia. In 1956, Manbhum district was partitioned between Bihar and West Bengal under the States Reorganization Act and the Bihar and West Bengal (Transfer of Territories) Act 1956.[3]

Purulia I community development block has an area of 282.50 km2.[2]
The area forms the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The general scenario is undulating land with scattered hills.[4]
Gram panchayats
Gram panchayats of Purulia I block/ panchayat samiti are: Bhandarpuara-Chipida, Chakaltore, Dimdiha, Durku, Garafusra, Lagda, Manara and Sonajuri.[5]
Demographics
As per 2001 census, Purulia I block had a total population of 125,261, out of which 64,980 were males and 60,281 were females. Purulia I block registered a population growth of 14.34 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for Purulia district was 13.96 per cent.[2] Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[6]
Scheduled castes at 23,886 formed around one-fifth the population. Scheduled tribes numbered 11,937.[7]
Literacy
As per 2001 census, Purlia I block had a total literacy of 54.40 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 73.84 per cent female literacy was 33.47 per cent. Purulia district had a total literacy of 55.57 per cent, male literacy being 73.72 per cent and female literacy being 36.50 per cent.[8]
