Madonna is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Born in Bay City, Michigan, on August 16, 1958, and raised in Rochester Hills, Michigan, she moved to New York City in 1978, for a career in modern dance.[1] After performing as a member of the pop musical groups Breakfast Club and Emmy, she released her self-titled debut album, Madonna in 1983, by Sire Records.[2] She received a Best New Artist nomination at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) for the song "Borderline". Madonna was followed by a series of hit singles from her studio albums Like a Virgin (1984) and True Blue (1986) which gave her global recognition.[3] Madonna became a pop icon for pushing the boundaries of lyrical content in popular music and imagery in her music videos, which became a fixture on MTV.[4] In 1985, she received a number of VMA nominations for her music videos and two nominations in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance category of the Grammy Awards. Billboard magazine listed her as the "Top Pop Artist" for 1985, as well as the "Top Pop Singles Artist" for the next two years.
From 1987 to 1990, Madonna won a number of awards at the VMAs for the music videos of her songs "Like a Prayer", "Express Yourself" and "Vogue". MTV also honored her as the "Artist of the Decade" in 1989. In 1990, the Hollywood Walk of Fame committee decided to award Madonna with a star on the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk, but she showed no interest in accepting the recognition. The Blond Ambition World Tour won the award for Most Creative Stage Production at the 1990 Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; it was also nominated in the Major Tour of the Year category. Alongside her music awards, Madonna was honored for her charitable works in helping cure AIDS, by the AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmfAR). In 1992, Madonna won her first Grammy Award in the category of Best Long Form Music Video, for the video album of the Blond Ambition Tour. The video release of her 1990 compilation album, The Immaculate Collection, also won the Best Long Form Video award at the VMAs.
In 1996, Madonna played the starring role in the film, Evita, for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Madonna's seventh studio album, Ray of Light (1998), became one of her most critically acclaimed releases,[5] and won her a number of Grammy Awards, while being nominated for the Album of the Year. It also won her the VMA for Video of the Year for the title track. From 2001 to 2008, Madonna embarked on four worldwide concert tours—Drowned World (2001), Re-Invention (2004), Confessions (2006) and Sticky & Sweet (2008)—which received a total of eight nominations at the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards, but won only one award for the Confessions Tour in 2006, in the category of Most Creative Stage Production. The Brit Awards have nominated Madonna in 12 categories, and in 2006 she won the International Female Solo Artist award, for her 10th studio album, Confessions on a Dance Floor. In 2007, Madonna won another Grammy Award in the Best Long Form Music Video category, for the live release of the Confessions Tour.
Madonna is ranked by the Recording Industry Association of America as the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century and the second top-selling female artist in the United States, with 64.5 million certified albums.[6] She has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and is recognized as the best-selling female recording artist of all time by Guinness World Records. Madonna has won 20 VMAs from a total of 68 nominations, more than any other artist ever. She is the first female artist to receive the lifetime achievement Video Vanguard Award. In 2008, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as one of the best-known and most influential artists, producers, and other people who have in some major way influenced the music industry. As May 2016, Madonna has won at least 310 awards from 647 nominations.

MTV Awards
MTV Artist of the Decade
In 1989, Madonna was awarded the Artist of the Decade by a poll of MTV viewers in recognizing her achievement during the 1980s. Biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli documented that fellow pop star Michael Jackson had become jealous when Madonna received that honor.[58][59] He telephoned his attorney John Braca to complain that Madonna did not deserve such an honor. He said, "See, it makes me look bad. I'm the artist of the decade. Did she outsell Thriller?"[59] In response to his client's agitation, Branca suggested that they approach MTV with the idea of a fictional award they could give to Jackson. They decided to name it as Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Artist of the Decade Award. Jackson liked the introduction of the award, and commented, "That'll sure teach that heifer", referring to Madonna.[59]
