This Infogalactic:Open project copyrights article aims to clarify some InfoGalactic copyright distinctions.
This article does not intend to play rules lawyer (Canon Six) nor use "weasel" words, but to clarify some fundamental concepts in order to secure confidence and attract more projects, users, and contributors.

From the beginning
InfoGalactic is primarily a wiki-based encyclopedia and the first lines of the Infogalactic:Introduction states:
“ | Infogalactic is an Internet-based, free-content encyclopedia project that is a dynamic fork of Wikipedia and improves upon the online encyclopedia's model of openly editable content. | ” |
Specifically, the Free content article lists under a "Legal matters" section the various types of content ownerships: Copyright, Public domain, Copyleft and/or Share-alike, and Copyfree - Permissive free software licences, with further breakdowns, as well as a "Usage" section with breakdowns of Media, Software, Engineering and technology, Academia, and Legislation.
As indicated by the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0) button on all InfoGalactic wiki-pages (at the bottom-right corner next to "Powered By MediaWiki"), in the case of the InfoGalactic encyclopedia we may assume all content, except where noted, falls under this category. Thus non-encyclopedia wiki pages should declare their projects' licences.
Understanding these foundation concepts are necessary before reclaiming or declaring other rights in non-encyclopedia open projects or sub-projects shared on the InfoGalactic wiki.
Wiki projects beyond the encyclopedia
The necessity to reserve some rights on some wiki project pages must be emphasized now that Other Wiki Projects On Infogalactic are starting. Whether any projects flourish or not, it's a good idea to formally declare the rights and intentions available within the InfoGalactic as a wiki and/or encyclopedia, as well as each project independently declaring its position(s).
For example, these are known InfoGalactic projects (add yours):
Project | Description | Note | Naming | Aims | License | Icon |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The InfoGalactic encyclopedia | is an open free-content internet-based wiki encyclopedia, forked from Wikipedia, largely alt-right and/or free speech oriented | this is the main body of work on the InfoGalactic wiki | N/A not applicable | free and openly editable content | CC0 | |
The Audio & Video Samples Database project | is an open free-content list of lists with images, metadata, and links, as a resource of source-information about copyrighted pop-culture mainstream media for audio and video editing into new audio, video, or other media projects including music (remixes, mashups, etc), radio shows, documentaries, art, etc., allowed under fair use policies | These listed lists "nested within" the InfoGalactic wiki won't likely be linked "into" by encyclopedia articles but will reference "out" to articles (ie. TV or movie titles). | strict list titles required | free and openly editable content | CC0 | |
The Truther Top 20s project | is an open free-content list series to clearly provide the basic top 20 (give or take) assertions and/or rationales, rightly and/or wrongly, why truthers, historical revisionists, skeptics, conspirophiles, etc, believe what they believe, hopefully with evidence, criticisms, refutations, and clarifications | These listed lists "nested within" the InfoGalactic wiki may freely link with articles where applicable. It may be better to think of these education basic Top 20 lists as a new article format that can be applied to any dogma (religion, politics, scientism, etc) or other complex topics requiring simple introductions. | strict list titles required | free and openly editable content | CC0 | |
The Trutherism 101 project | is an open source anti-propaganda animated series development and production management wiki project | This project in the InfoGalactic wiki won't likely be linked to much by encyclopedia articles but will reference articles. | strict article titles required | It would be nice if I could force everyone who uses this content to pay me and I'd give InfoGalactic a cut, the practical reality is that this project might have greater success and exposure by allowing others to freely capitalize on my/our work and hope they kick back, with the caveat that they always attribute and share alike. Naturally I'll also try to capitalize on my own work too, and will have my own "official branding" that they may not use, like a seal of quality, authenticity, and how/where to support. | BY-SA | |
The Open Screenwriting Projects | is an open source concept, story, and screenwriting development wiki project | This project in the InfoGalactic wiki won't likely be linked to much by encyclopedia articles but will reference articles. | strict article titles required | Strict rights definitions should be applied. Some writers may simply like to share their ideas freely, while others may wish to openly develop their projects with some rights reserved. This is necessary to attract some legitimate talent and usage. | various | N/A |
Open Screenwriting Project: Foiled Again | is an open source sub-project to wiki-develop a feature screenplay / storyboard / graphic novel by User:JasonCarswell | This project in the InfoGalactic wiki won't be linked to by encyclopedia articles but will reference articles. | strict article titles required | I intend to openly develop this project with some rights reserved. I will attribution/credit for all the good ideas, used or not, with non-commercial share-alike restrictions. In addition to this standard BY-NC-SA license, I also intend to allow derivative non-commercial works, as well as my right (as primary author in this instance) to negotiate commercialization of my work (and/or derivative work, with those contributors joining negotiations). (For over 15 years I've wondered why this isn't a standard when it should.) | BY-NC-SA |

Example of default
As indicated by the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0) button on all InfoGalactic wiki-pages (at the bottom-right corner next to "Powered By MediaWiki"), in the case of the InfoGalactic encyclopedia we may assume all content, except where noted, falls under this category.
For the sake of clarity and perhaps restating the obvious to some, as well as to form the good habit of open declarations, all non-enclyclopedia projects should include a template side declaration indicating the type of project licencing desired, in order to supersede and reclaim rights back from the wiki-wide default.
The first four projects above are actually BY-SA (Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0)) - NOT CC0 (Public Domain).
-
- fixed soon
Example of uncertainty
The fifth project above is variable, and not ideal as a clear example, yet a circumstance that may occur from time to time. (unless all sidebar template combinations are presented in a table, negating the need for these 3 examples).
-
- perhaps eventually
Example of certainty
The sixth project above is BY-NC-SA (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0)).
-
- make sidebar template
For the sake of clarity and to form the good habit of open declarations, this non-enclyclopedia project includes the sidebar template declaration indicating the type of project licencing desired to supersede and reclaim rights back from the wiki-wide default.
Creative Commons
Rights can be very confusing, especially since now there are so many variations, options, and loopholes. For the sake of simplicity, only some of the Creative Commons license are listed here for quick reference.
Types of Creative Commons licenses

Non-commercial (NC) Licensees may copy, distribute, display, and perform the work and make derivative works based on it only for non-commercial purposes.
