BeLeave was a campaign group which campaigned for the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union in the 2016 EU referendum. The group was set up by Darren Grimes.[1] Despite being described by Vote Leave as a youth-focused "outreach group",[2] BeLeave was in fact based inside the Vote Leave headquarters[3] and largely targeted older voters.[4] It was used as a proxy through which Vote Leave illegally spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on Facebook advertisements in an unlawful effort to influence the outcome of the referendum.[4]

Allegations of illegal funding activity
In March 2018 former BeLeave activist Shahmir Sanni claimed that BeLeave was used by Vote Leave to exceed legal spending limits.[5] The Times newspaper reported that Grimes spent £625,000 on Canadian social media company AggregateIQ, using a donation he received from Vote Leave.[6]
Electoral Commission findings
On 17 July 2018, The Electoral Commission published the conclusions of its investigation into the campaign spending of Vote Leave and it found that Vote Leave and Darren Grimes broke electoral law.[7]
