Wellington College International Shanghai (Chinese: 上海惠灵顿国际学校) is a co-educational day and boarding independent school based in the Qiantan area,[1] in Pudong, Shanghai.[2] It serves students ages three to 18, and is scheduled to have 1,500 students.[1]

Wellington has been accepting students since August 2014 and currently has just over 400 pupils. Wellington shares its not-for-profit status and royal foundation with its sister school, Wellington College. Wellington College UK was originally founded by Queen Victoria in 1859 as the national memorial to Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington.

When the school first opened, it only accepted children with passports other than Mainland Chinese. The school is negotiating with Chinese authorities to allow Mainland Chinese children without foreign citizenship.[1]

Leadership

The Founding Master (Headmaster) of Wellington College International Shanghai is David Cook who was previously Founding Master at Wellington College International Tianjin. Cook was previously Founding Headmaster of Repton School in Dubai, and before that, was Head at Dulwich International College in Thailand, Lewes Old Grammar School in England and Qatar Academy.

Curriculum

Wellington College International Shanghai’s academic programme is based on the English National Curriculum for England and Wales. The College offers the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in Years 10-11 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in Years 12 and 13, which will start in August 2015. The curriculum is supplemented by the Eight Aptitudes, inspired by the work of Harvard Professor, Howard Gardner.

Architecture

In design and appearance, the College’s facilities reflect the distinctive classical style of Wellington College in the UK,[1] and its sister school, Wellington College International Tianjin.[citation needed]

Sport

Wellington is home to Shanghai’s sole school cricket pitch, a 25 metres six-lane competition swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, three football pitches, and a 400m Tartan running track, amongst multiple other indoor and outdoor facilities.

Activities

Wellington offers a wide programme of activities and annual events. Every pupil is involved in the Wellington Arts Programme which provides access to Drama, Dance, Music, Creative Writing and Art & Design.

Wellington Academy Programme

The Wellington Academy Programme provides a specialised training environment for children and parents. Wellington pupils and children from the wider Shanghai community are taught by coaches and Wellington teachers in purpose-built College educational and sport facilities.
