Vijayawada railway division is one of the six railway divisions under South Central Railway zone of the Indian Railways. The headquarters of the division are located at Vijayawada.[1]

History
It was formed as one of the eight divisions in Southern Railway on 16 May 1956. After the formation of South Central Railway zone, the division was integrated into it on 2 October 1966.[2]
Jurisdiction
The division is located completely in Andhra Pradesh and covers the districts of Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari, East Godavari, Prakasam, Nellore and Visakhpatnam.[1][3] There are total 270 passenger trains with 78 daily expresses, 44 average non-daily expresses, 129 passenger trains, 15 average non-daily passenger trains, 2 work men special, 2 rail buses and 180 average no. of freight trains.[2]
Sections and branch lines
The division has a broad gauge route of 958.926 km (595.849 mi) and a running track of 1,642.160 km (1,020.391 mi). There are three electrified lines in the division with 701 km (436 mi) of total route and 1,936 km (1,203 mi) of total track. There is no metre gauge track in the division. The Gudur–Duvvada (Vijayawada–Gudur and Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam), Vijayawada–Kondapalli and Samalkot–Kakinada Port are electrified and double-track railway lines.[4][5][1][6] While, Gudivada–Machilipatnam and Bhimavaram–Narasapuram are non–electrified and single-track railway lines.[7][8] Kondapalli railway station is the divisional interchange station.[9]

Performance and earnings
Vijayawada railway division generates much of its revenue from freight transport, which includes major commodities like coal, fertilisers, food grains, cement etc. Krishnapatnam and Kakinada Ports are the two main revenue earners for the division in freight transport.[13] For the financial year 2014–15, the gross earnings of the division was a whooping ₹4,603.27 crore (US$680 million).[12] It includes ₹764.85 crore (US$110 million) in terms of passenger transport and ₹3,710.68 crore (US$550 million) in freight transport. It recorded a 47.89% increase in its freight revenues as compared to its previous year which stands at ₹2,509 crore (US$370 million).[14][12]
The financial year of 2015–16 earned 5.62 percent more gross revenue than its previous year.[15]

Awards and achievements
The office of the Vijayawada Divisional Regional Manager was awarded the certified by the National Energy Conservation Award (NECA)-2013 based on the steps taken on energy efficiency.[18] It also won 19 of 58 shields based its performance in 2013.[19]
