Teddington School is a coeducational secondary school with academy status, located in the Teddington area of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, England. The school has over 1,100 pupils in the age range 11-16, and is situated on a large site adjacent to the River Thames, opposite Trowlock Island.
History
The school opened in 1962 as the Teddington Secondary School, a single-sex school, taking over the senior boys of Stanley Road School when it ceased to cater for the full age-range, as well as the boys from Twickenham Technical School.[1] Pupils from the former St Mark's School in St Marks Road joined Teddington School in April 1963.[2]
From the late 1960's to the mid-1980's it was called Teddington Boys' School, the name being changed to Teddington School on the admission of girls in 1985 for the first time. The school's uniform colours during this period were black and red, with a school blazer badge displaying a swan upon a green background, the coat of arms of the County of Middlesex and a gold lion rampant on a red background, with the motto in Latin Meret Qui Laborat beneath. In 2010 under a central government public works programme entitled Building Schools for the Future, the original mid-20th Century design school buildings on the Broom Road site and its attached hardcourt sports fields of an athletics field, football pitch and tennis courts, were demolished, and a new school building and sports' ground were constructed by the builder Mace Group Limited at a cost of £36 million.[3] The school was also re-branded at this time with its uniform being fundamentally redesigned to a teal and grey colour scheme and a kingfisher bird emblem.
The school was designated as a 'Specialist Visual Arts College', before being converted to Academy status in August 2012.
In 2014 a Sixth Form was introduced in the school's curriculum for the first time.
Houses
The school's "House" system is known to have been in operation in 1977, and possibly began earlier. The school possesses four separate Houses, viz., Stuart, Tudor, Windsor and York. The names correspond to the final letter of each form group's name. AS and BS form groups are in Stuart House, AT and BT form groups are in Tudor House, AW and BW form groups are in Windsor House, and AY and BY form groups are in York House. (However, as of September 2015, form names are Y1, Y2, W1, W2 etc.) There are several inter-House competitions throughout the year, including in Drama and Sports. 25 merits points is equal to 1 house point (KS3) and 1 commodation is equal to 1 house point (KS4). At the end of each school year the House with the most points wins the Teddington School Houses' Cup.
Head Master
The current Head Master (2014-) is Mr. John Wilkinson, who was previously the Head Master of Elmgreen School in Lambeth, London.
