Aged 19, he began his professional career playing for Sturm Graz in the Austrian Bundesliga in 2006.
Prödl made his Strum Graz debut on 9 December 2006, in a 3–0 loss against SV Mattersburg. Prödl then scored his first Sturm Graz goal against Rheindorf Altach on 9 May 2007, scoring the only goal, in a 1–0.
Prödl's performance soon attracted attention from clubs in Serie A and Bundesliga.[2] In response to the transfer speculation, Sturm Graz placed a price tag of 5 million euro any clubs wants to sign Prödl.[3]
Werder Bremen
On 15 July 2008, Prödl moved to Germany to play for Werder Bremen for worth 2.5 million euro, which keep him until 2012.[4] Upon joining Werder Bremen, Prödl said his aim at the club was to win trophies.[5]
Prödl made his Werder Bremen debut, in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, in a 9–3 win over Eintracht Nordhorn on 9 August 2008. Seven days later on 16 August 2008, Prödl made his Werder Bremen league debut, in a 2–2 draw against Arminia Bielefeld.[6] Prödl made his Champions League debut, playing as a right-back, in a 1–1 draw against Inter Milan on 1 October 2008.[7] By the first half of the season, Prödl made thirteen out of the seventeen appearance, which he missed four of them, due to being on the bench. Prödl also played in the unfamiliar right back role in absence of fellow right-back Clemens Fritz.[8] Prödl, however, injured his ankle while vacation, which saw him out for two months.[9] After appearing three match on the bench, Prödl made his return to the first team, in a 0–0 draw against Hoffenheim on 7 March 2009.[10] Prödl scored his first Werder Bremen goal in the second leg of the last sixteen of UEFA Cup, in a 2–2 draw against Saint-Étienne, which the club went through to the next round, as Werder Bremen won 3–2 on aggregate.[11] Since making his return, Prödl have since reverted to centre-back and went on to make twenty-two appearance in his first season. Prödl formed a partnership with Naldo in central-defense when they beat Bayer Leverkusen 1–0 in the DFB-Pokal Final.[12] Prödl also another final in the UEFA Cup, which he played 120 minutes in a 3–2 loss against Shakhtar Donetsk.[13]
Ahead of the 2009–10 season, Prödl suffered a virus infection in the pre-season friendly[14] and since made that recovery. In the opening game of the season, he played as a centre-back in his first start against Eintracht Frankfurt, but was sent-off in the last minutes after a second bookable offense, which saw Werder Bremen lose 3–2.[15] Soon after, Prödl suffered a knee injury that kept him out for three months.[16] After three months on the sideline, Prödl appeared on the substitution bench and made his return to the first team, where he came on for Naldo in the 76th minutes, in a 6–0 win over Freiburg on 21 November 2009.[17] Prödl then scored his first Werder Bremen league goal on 27 February 2010, in a 2–1 win over Mainz 05.[18] However, Prödl spend the most of the season on the substitution bench, as he made nine appearance for the club.
In the 2010–11 season, Prödl started to be in the regular first team following Naldo's injury at the start of the season and formed a central defense partnership with Per Mertesacker.[19] Prödl scored his first European goal in Matchday 6 Group-Stage of the UEFA Champions League, in a 3–0 win over Inter Milan on 7 December 2010.[20] Prödl then scored his first league goal of the season on 27 February 2011, in a 2–2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.[21] However, Prödl suffered a knee injury and after undergoing surgery, it would be announced Prödl will miss the reminder of the 2010–11 season, which he ended his season, making twenty-five appearance.[22]
At the start of the 2011–12 season, Prödl continued to be in and out of the first team, having been on the substitution bench. Prödl scored his first goal of the season, in a 3–1 win over Mainz on 29 October 2011.[23] However, during the match against Kaiserslautern on 21 January 2012, Prödl was injured during the match and had to be substituted in the 29th minutes.[24] After a successful surgery, it was announced that Prödl would be out for six weeks.[25] Prödl made his return against Hannover 96 on 11 March 2012 and then scored, in a 3–0 win.[26] However, his return was short-lived after suffering a hamstring injury that kept him out for two weeks.[27] Prödl made his return to the first team on 28 April 2012, in a 3–1 loss against Wolfsburg.[28] Despite making sixteen appearance in the 2011–12 season, it was announced that Prödl signed a three-year contract with the club, keeping him until 2015 at the end of the season.[29]
Though started the 2012–13 season with two appearance, Prödl suffered a thigh injury[30] and then head injury.[31] Following his return, Prödl scored his first goal of the season, in a 4–1 win over Hoffenheim on 2 December 2012.[32] Prödl was then sent-off in the 44th minutes for the foul on Mario Gómez, which saw Werder Bremen lose 6–1 badly to Bayern Munich on 23 February 2013.[33] After this, Prödl was given a two-match ban.[34] In a match against Fortuna Düsseldorf on 13 April 2013, Prödl was appointed captain and played 90 minutes, as the match finished 2–2 draw.[35] Prödl went on to make twenty-eight appearance in the 2012–13 season.
In the 2013–14 season, Prödl scored the club's first match without Thomas Schaaf, which saw Werder Bremen lose 3–1 to Saarbrücken in the first round of DFB Pokal.[36] In the opening game of the season against Eintracht Braunschweig, Prödl provided the assist for Zlatko Junuzović to score the only goal in the game.[37] Prödl then suffered a muscle injury that kept him out for two weeks.[38] By the 21 November 2013, Prödl's recovery was delayed by three weeks.[39] After making his return, Prödl captained four match between 1 February 2014 and 1 March 2014. Prödl then scored two goals in two matches against Wolfsburg[40] and Hannover 96.[41] At the end of the season, Prödl made twenty-seven appearance after helping the club avoid relegation, finishing in 14th place. Prödl described the season as difficult, citing the league as the main factor.[42] Prödl was also challenged the club, whether or not they would renew Prödl's contract or else he would leave.[43]
After missing two game to the start of the 2014–15 due to a hamstring injury,[44] Prödl scored his first goal of the season on 12 September 2014, in a 3–3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.[45] Prödl then missed one match, due to injury, which he suffered a flu at first[46] and then a hip problem.[47] Prödl's hip injury came after scoring his second goal of the season, in a 2–0 win over Stuttgart on 8 November 2014.[48] In a 5–2 defeat to Frankfurt, Prödl came off in the first half and it was announced after the match that Prödl would be out for six to eight weeks.[49] Prödl scored on his return on 21 February 2015, in a 1–1 draw against Schalke 04.[50] During the season, Prödl captained five different occasions and made twenty-two league appearance and scoring three times.
On 12 May 2015, it was announced that he would leave Bremen at the end of the 2014–15 season, as his contract had come to an end.[51] The club previously offered Prödl a new contract at the start of the season.[52] During his time at Bremen Prödl scored 10 goals, playing predominately in the central defence role.
Watford
On 1 June 2015, Prödl signed for Watford on a five-year contract after being released by Werder Bremen. Prödl became Watford's first signing as they began for life in the Premier League. He scored his first goal for Watford in a 3-1 defeat to West Ham United[53]
