Ross Forbes (born 3 March 1989 in Glasgow) is a Scottish footballer, currently playing for Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton.

Career

Motherwell

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Forbes began his football career with Motherwell. In the 2007–08 season, Forbes was on the bench, on 23 April 2008, against Celtic, being an unused substitute in the matches and continued doing so the following season, as he appeared four times on the bench.

Loan move to Dumbarton

On 24 January 2009, Forbes was loaned out to Dumbarton, until the end of the season. At the club, Forbes was a key man in helping the club win the Scottish Football League Third Division championship. He scored his only goal in a 2–0 win for the sons against Berwick on 11 April 2009. He hoped his good performances would earn him a first team place at Motherwell next season.

Since leaving, Manager Jim Chapman says he's disappointed that Forbes made a breakthrough at Motherwell, having expected to make a return to Dumbarton.

Return to Motherwell

Forbes made his first-team debut for Motherwell in the Europa League first qualifying round match against Llanelli on 2 July 2009, a match in which they lost 1–0 in Jim Gannon's first match in charge. He scored 2 goals in the return leg of their second qualifying round match against KS Flamurtari Vlorë which Motherwell won 8–1 and another in the next qualifying round home match, the 1–3 loss against Steaua Bucharest.

After scoring on his debut on the opening game of the season, He carried his good form into the league campaign, scoring five times in the opening 10 games, and was rewarded by being named SPL Young Player of the Month for August. Forbes was also rewarded by extending his contract, that will expire until 2012. On 10 February 2010, Forbes had his goal ruled offside against his boyhood club, Rangers, which he described it as "goal of his dreams", which ended in a 1-1 draw. In a match against Hibernian, Forbes had the chance to equalise from a penalty kick with three minutes left, but it was saved by Graeme Smith, who had conceded the penalty in the first place. After the match, Forbes says he's couldn't cope and move on following the missing penalty. However, later in the season, under manager Craig Brown, Forbes form's has deeply affected badly after a couple of months coming on as a sub without scoring and often playing out of position by being placed on the bench, in addition with several match deciding errors and misjudgements.

In the 2010/11 season, Forbes starts his season by scoring a curling delivery straight into the net, in the Europa League second qualifying round match against Breiðablik in the first leg. Under newly manager Stuart McCall, Forbes says he's given a second chance to show his talent, in addition that he's the blame for being dropped out of the team. Like last season, Forbes form's has continued deeply affected badly after a couple of months coming on as a sub without scoring and often playing out of position by being placed on the bench, in addition with several match deciding errors and misjudgements. In the final of Scottish Cup, Forbes was an unused substitute for the remainder of the matches played, as he watched Motherwell lose 3–0 against Celtic. In the 2011/12 season couldn't get any worse for Forbes as his first team has been increasingly been limited and mostly spent time on the substitute bench. At the end of the 2011–12 season, Forbes was released by the club.

Partick Thistle

After being released by Motherwell, Forbes was close to sealing a move to Scottish Premier League relegated side Dunfermline Athletic, but nothing happened. Forbes signed a six-month deal with Partick Thistle on 5 September 2012. After the move, Forbes will be joined with former team-mate Steven Lawless; also stated joining the club is a perfect timing.

He made his debut for the club, coming on as a substitute for Aaron Taylor-Sinclair, in a 2–1 win over Cowdenbeath. A month later after his debut, Forbes scored his first goal for the club, in a 7–0 thrasher against Airdrie United. His second goal came on 10 November 2012, in a 5–1 win over Dunfermline Athletic; also provided assist for Conrad Balatoni during the match and would score against them once again. Having seven appearance and scoring twice, Forbes signed a new contract, that will run until the end of the season. On 2 March 2013; also provided assist for Steven Craig, who would score the hat-trick later in the season. At the end of the season, the club promoted to SPL for the first time in nine years. Since becoming a regular in the first team, Forbes signed a one-year deal with the club. Upon signing a new contract, Forbes says Partick Thistle helped him get his career on track and given his love playing football. Forbes set up Andy Dowie to score one of the goals that led to Thistle winning the league away to Falkirk. Ross Forbes is a set- piece specialist.

In the 2013–14 season, Forbes made his first Scottish Premiership appearance since leaving Motherwell in a 0–0 draw against Dundee United in the opening game of the season. Forbes scored his First Premiership goal for Partick Thistle against St Mirren coming off the bench in a 2–1 comeback victory. However, Forbes playing time was limited, due to being on the substitute bench and only come on in a late minute.

Dunfermline Athletic

On 31 January 2014, Forbes was released by Partick Thistle and signed for Dunfermline Athletic on the same day, where the club is standing in third tier of the Scottish Professional Football League. The next day, Forbes made an immediate impact by scoring on his debut in a 3–1 win over East Fife.

Greenock Morton

In a swap deal with Andrew Barrowman, Forbes made the move to Greenock to sign with league rivals Greenock Morton. Forbes signed a one-year extension in May 2015.

At the end of his deal, Forbes agreed a two-year extension until summer 2018.

International career

In recognition of his good form at the start of the 2009–10 season, Forbes was called into the Scotland under–21s squad to play Belarus u-21s on 9 October 2009.

Personal life

Forbes is lifelong Rangers fan and was a season ticket holder, along with his father during the Advocaat era. He revealed that Barry Ferguson was his favourite player around that time.
