The length of the runway strip was increased to 9,000 feet (2,700 m), making it possible for larger aircraft to land at Bhopal.[2] The first direct seasonal international flight from Bhopal was to Jeddah, a Hajj charter flown by Saudia on 23 October 2010 for Hajj travelers.[3]
In 2013, the airport become the first airport in the state to use solar power for running its utility grid system. 100-kilowatt solar power plant was made operational in June 2013, with plans to install a 2 megawatt solar power plant at the airport in the future.[4] The airport has night landing facilities, an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and CAT VII fire services.[5]
Integrated terminal
The new integrated terminal building worth Rs 135 crore was inaugurated on June 28, 2011 by the then Civil Aviation minister, Vayalar Ravi.[6] The state government had given 400 acres of land for the construction of international terminal. The terminal building is built over an area of 26,936 square metres (289,940 sq ft) and has 14 check-in counters, four immigration counters for departures and 6 immigration counters for arrival. It also has two customs counters, each for arrival and departure, and six X-ray machines for security.[5]

Accidents and Incidents
- On 4 December 2015 An Air India aircraft from Delhi to Bhopal with 116 passengers had a close shave when it suffered a bird hit while landing at the Raja Bhoj Airport on Thursday morning, sending jitters among those on the board.
This is second accident with Air India flight within a week. Two days's ago flight could not take off after problem was found in two tyres of the aircraft.
Airport authorities said that AI flight was landing at Bhopal airport when a bird hit one of the engines.
However, pilot landed the aircraft safely. Sources said it could have been a major problem had the aircraft was hit by bird on a higher altitude.
Flight later took off for its next destination after engineers inspected the aircraft and found it in a condition to fly, said airport authorities.
