Van Gogh's tortured life had been the subject of several 20th-century operas, including Van Gogh by Nevit Kodallı (first performed in 1956), The Passion of Vincent van Gogh by Christopher Yavelow (first performed in 1984), and Vincent by Einojuhani Rautavaara (first performed in 1990).
