Penn Jersey Roller Derby (PJRD) is a roller derby league based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 2005, the league consists of four women's teams, one men's team, and a mixed women's team which competes against teams from other leagues.
The league was founded as the "Penn Jersey She Devils" in February 2005 by two men, Ken Sikes and Greg Spencer, who were fans of traditional, banked track roller derby.[1] They recruited former professional derby skaters Judy Sowinski and Arnold "Skip" Schoen to train the new teams.[2] Although always identifying with Philadelphia, the league was long based in Mount Laurel, New Jersey.[3]
The league developed its own ruleset, and this was adopted by the Old School Derby Association, founded by Sikes, of which Penn Jersey was a founding member.[1] In 2010, the league took its present name, and purchased its own banked track, allowing it to host both flat and banked track games.[1]
Maria Rodriguez-Gregg, a member-elect of the New Jersey General Assembly, plays for the "Dishonor Roll" in the PJRD as "Honeybee" and is a member of the She-Devils Travel Team.[4][5][6]
