Pattathuvila Karunakaran (1925–1988) was a famous Malayalamshort story writer.[1]

He was born on 31 July 1925 in Quilon district in Kerala. 'Pattahthuvila' is his family name. His father was Kochukunju and mother Kochukunjali. He had his schooling at Craven School, Quilon and after graduation from Presidency College Madras, he joined Law College Trivandrum but did not complete the course. After a brief stint as journalist in the Kerala Kaumudi he went to USA to study business administration. After taking his master's in Business Administration from Syracuse University he returned to Kerala and joined the Calicut branch of Pierse Leslie India Ltd. as manager and settled down in Calicut, where he spent the rest of his life as part of the celebrated 'Kozhikode Cultural Circle' which included people like Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, M.T.Vasudevan Nair, Thikkodiyan, V. K. N., G. Aravindan, N. P. Mohammed, M. V. Devan etc.[2]

In 1955, he married Saraswathi (Sara). They had two daughters- Anitha and Anuradha.

Though unlike most of his peers in the literary field he shunned the media and seldom appeared in public forums, he was a close observer of the developments around him which is reflected in all his works. While many storywriters of his generation turned to writing novels he stuck to short stories.[3]

In 1972 he was given Kerala Sahitya Academy award for his collection Muni .

Though he could never fulfill his campus-day dream to study film making[4] he was able to leave an indelible mark in the history of Malayalam cinema by producing the pathbreaking film Uttarayanam in 1974 which won several state and national awards.

He died on June 5, 1988.
