History
This constituency was created under the Representation of the People Act 1918.[2]
Boundaries
Following the review by the Boundary Commission taking effect at the 2010 general election, the North Cornwall constituency shares the same area as the former North Cornwall District Council. Before 2010, the constituency covered a larger area, including a number of wards from the former Restormel District Council (Edgcumbe North, Edgcumbe South, Gannel, Rialton, St Columb and St Enoder) and the town of Newquay, which were transferred to the new St Austell and Newquay seat. The Stoke Climsland ward was added from the South East Cornwall to North Cornwall.
Following the introduction of revised boundaries for the Cornwall Council elections of 2013, the North Cornwall constituency comprises the following electoral wards:
Altarnun; Bodmin St Leonard; Bodmin St Marys; Bodmin St Petroc; Bude; Camelford; Grenville and Stratton; Lanivet and Blisland; Launceston Central; Launceston North and North Petherwin; Launceston South; Padstow and St Merryn; Poundstock; St Issey and St Tudy; St Minver and St Endellion; St Teath and St Breward; Stoke Climsland; Tintagel; Wadebridge East and Wadebridge West.
Several former borough constituencies lay within the area of the current constituency, most of which were abolished as 'rotten boroughs' by the Great Reform Act, 1832:
- Bossiney (abolished 1832)
- Camelford (abolished 1832)
- Launceston (abolished 1885)
- Newport (abolished 1832 - settlement now a suburb of Launceston).
