The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, is a United States-based, non-profit organization, and its network of chapters nationwide help people affected by multiple sclerosis by funding research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services that help people with multiple sclerosis and their families. It is headquartered in New York City.
Founded in 1946, originally under the name Association for Advancement of Research on Multiple Sclerosis,[1] the National Multiple Sclerosis Society supports more multiple sclerosis research, offers more services for people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, provides more professional education programs, and furthers more advocacy efforts than any other multiple sclerosis organization in the world.[citation needed]

What is the BP MS 150?
The BP MS 150 is a two-day fundraising bike ride organized by the National MS Society South Central Region. The BP MS 150 is the largest of the 100 Bike MS events in the United States with 13,000 cyclists and 3,500 volunteers with countless spectators along the route from Houston and at the finish line in Austin. In 2014 the BP MS 150 set a fundraising milestone by raising $20 million to support the mission of the National MS Society to create a world free of MS. The fundraising goal for the 2015 BP MS 150 is $21 million.
History of the BP MS 150
Day One
There are three official start locations for the BP MS 150 in the Houston area each route with a total mileage of varying between 160-180 miles to Austin with breakpoints located every 8 to 15 miles. The ride begins Saturday morning at three convenient starting points:
- Tully Stadium in Houston
- Rhodes Stadium in Katy
- Waller Stadium in Waller
Cyclists follow scenic roads into Bellville for lunch. Day One ends at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in La Grange. There are more than 200 teams that enjoy the overnight celebration at the Fayette County Fairgrounds and Camp St. Mark’s locations in La Grange.
Day Two
On Sunday morning, Club 300 members, riders with MS, and the team who received the Platinum Safety Award lead the start on one of two routes that lead to Bastrop Intermediate School for lunch. Cyclists can choose from one of the 2 exciting routes to Austin*:
- Bechtel Challenge Route winds through the rolling terrain of Bastrop and Buescher State Parks
- Genzyme One-to-One Express Route (route bypasses the State Parks)
- Both routes merge before lunch at the Bastrop Intermediate School.
After lunch at Bastrop Intermediate School, the route takes cyclists into downtown Austin for exciting Finish Line festivities at the State Capitol near the Bob Bullock State History Museum
Research
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society supports and funds research activities spanning all research stages, including early discovery research, translational research that brings promising ideas forward into actual therapeutic solutions for testing, and clinical trials. This unique approach drives the pursuit of all promising avenues that can impact those living with multiple sclerosis. In 2012, the Society invested $44 million in over 350 new and ongoing projects.[citation needed]
