Nanyang Business School (NBS) is the business school of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU). Singapore's oldest business school, NBS was established in 1956 at the then Nanyang University, which was subsequently absorbed by the National University of Singapore in 1980 before it finally moved to NTU in 1987. It is also the largest business school in Singapore with over 4,400 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
NBS is widely regarded as Singapore's premier business school and is consistently ranked amongst the world's best. For 12 consecutive years since 2004, Nanyang Business School has been ranked No.1 in Singapore by The Economist Full-time MBA rankings.[1] NTU's flagship Nanyang MBA is also Singapore's No.1 MBA programme, having placed 29th worldwide in the 2016 Financial Times Global MBA Ranking.[2]
Contents
History
- 1956: Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy) is first offered at Nanyang University, a year after the Chinese-language university was founded.
- 1980: Nanyang University merges with the University of Singapore to form the National University of Singapore (NUS).
- 1981: Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) is established with a charter to train three-quarters of Singapore's engineers.
- 1987: The accountancy programme at NUS moves over to NTI, and the School of Accountancy (SOA) is established.
- 1989: SOA admits its first batch of undergraduates for the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree and is renamed the School of Accountancy and Commerce (SAC).
- 1990: The school is renamed the School of Accountancy and Business (SAB), as business specialisations such as Actuarial Science, Banking, Marketing and Human Resource Management are introduced.
- 1991: Nanyang Technological Institute becomes a full-fledged university, under the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Act.[3] The Nanyang MBA programme is launched in that same year. The Bachelor of Commerce degree is renamed as the Bachelor of Business degree.
- 1995: School of Accountancy and Business is renamed as the Nanyang Business School.
- 2004: Nanyang Business School is conferred the EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation.
- 2005: Nanyang Business School is awarded the AACSB (Association of Advance Collegiate School of Business) accreditation.[4]
Academia & Accreditations
Nanyang Business School offers a wide range of courses which are globally recognised. The school provides students with real-world business projects, giving them a myriad of experience and international exposure. The faculty has a diverse background in academia and industry as they hail from different countries which gives them the opportunity to project a strong cross cultural perspective in their teachings.
Nanyang Business School is the first business school in Singapore, and the third in Asia, to be accredited by both the European Quality Improvement System and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. It is also one of only 11 business schools outside of the US to be accredited with the AACSB in Accounting.

Nanyang Business School's unique selling proposition is its 3-year direct honours single degree programmes compared to 4 years direct and non-direct honours at the other Singapore universities. NBS' double degree programmes and integrated Bachelor/Master's programme can also be completed within 3.5 - 4 years.
The business school has a dedicated career office, NBS Career Services which consists of a team of specialists and counsellors who are committed in guiding the students along their career paths and helping them achieve their desired career goals through workshops, courses and seminars. All undergraduates will have to complete a professional internship as a part of the degree requirements.
Post Graduate Programs
NBS offers a 12-month full-time or 20-month part-time degree with 3 specific career tracks to choose from: General Management track, Strategy & Innovation track and Banking and Finance track. Each of these tracks offer 9 core courses in:

The 12 month basic MBA programme will span over 3 trimesters. The Nanyang MBA programme allows the students to either choose the Nanyang General MBA course or earn a Double MBA, earning one from Nanyang Business School and another from a prominent partner university. Other programmes include the Nanyang Executive MBA, Nanyang Fellows MBA, MSc Accountancy and MSc Financial Engineering.
Double MBA & Master's degree programmes offered by NBS is a tie up with Business Schools from Europe & Asia leveraging on their respective strengths to provide these courses:
- Nanyang-Waseda Double MBA: 2 MBA degrees in 14 months in Singapore and Japan.
- Nanyang-St. Gallen Double Masters: Nanyang MBA and Master of Arts in Strategy & International Management in 24 months in Singapore and St. Gallen, Switzerland.
- Nanyang-St. Gallen Double MBA: Nanyang MBA and St. Gallen MBA in 24 months in Singapore & St. Gallen, Switzerland.
- Nanyang-ESSEC Double Masters: Nanyang MBA and MSc in Management in 24 months in Singapore and France.
Campus
Nanyang Technological University is a large 200 hectare campus along the Jurong West district of Singapore consisting of a number of schools and colleges and residential buildings. The campus offers excellent facilities for the students to enjoy such as the e-commerce laboratory and financial trading rooms which are equipped with Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters terminals for teaching and research.

Nanyang Business School has more than 160 professors from more than 20 countries, proficient in 30 languages holding doctorates from the most renowned universities in the world.

Professor Vijay Sethi (Information Technology & Operations Management) was awarded World’s Best Business Professor by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) [5] in 2013. His work is focused on digital disruptions, the economics of technology, social media and networks, data analytics, legal and IPR issues, and patterns of new technology evolution.
Professor Tan Hun-Tong is the world's No.1 accounting researcher[6] according to the Brigham Young University (BYU) Accounting Research Rankings, while Professor Clive Lennox is ranked 2nd in Asia. NBS is ranked joint 7th in the world with MIT and is top in Singapore for accounting research.[7]
