Mike Lynch is the sports director and anchor for WCVB-TV Channel 5 in Boston, Massachusetts. He is seen on the air at 6 and 11 PM from Sunday to Thursday, or when a significant sports event is happening.

Early life and education

Lynch grew up in Swampscott, Massachusetts and graduated Swampscott High School in 1971. He did a postgraduate prep school year at Phillips Exeter Academy, graduating in 1972. He then attended Harvard University, graduating with his B.S. in Political Science and Government in 1976. At Harvard he was a football quarterback, placekicker, and baseball pitcher. Lynch kicked the winning field goal in the 1975 Harvard - Yale football game winning the Ivy League Championship.[1]

Career

He began his broadcasting career at WLYN in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1974 where he was a commentator for high school football and basketball.[2]

From 1977 to 1983, he was Sports Director for Boston's WMRE AM Radio.[2]

Lynch has been at WCVB-TV since 1982. He became the principal Sports Anchor in 1985[3]

"Lynchie" is also the host of SportsCenter 5 OT on the station and the "High 5" program, which credits outstanding high school athletes in Massachusetts. He was the preseason sideline reporter for the New England Patriots.

In 2012 the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association named Lynch Massachusetts Sportscaster of the Year. This was the sixteenth time Lynch received this award, more than any other sportscaster in the history of the award.[4][5]

Personal

Lynch lives in Winchester, Massachusetts with his wife Mary Ellen and their three daughters.
