Marpole Bridge
The Marpole Bridge is a swing span railway bridge that crosses the north arm of the Fraser River and connects Vancouver with Richmond, British Columbia.
The original Marpole Bridge was constructed in 1902. When it was damaged in 1966, a replacement bridge was opened in 1967. It is owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway.
This bridge is not to be confused with the road bridge of the same name that was dismantled in 1957.
July 9th 2014 fire
Just after 4:30pm, a fire caused heavy smoke to pour from the bridge coming from the wooden trestle. The Oak Street Bridge, which was located next to the bridge was closed to traffic both ways because of heavy smoke. Flights from YVR or coming to YVR were re-routed or delayed, and traffic was detoured from the bridge.
March 2016 Bridge Removal
During March 2016 the Marpole Railway Bridge was removed with a marine crane.
