Mann Gulch
Mann Gulch is a gulch of the upper Missouri River, in southeastern Lewis and Clark County, Montana.
The canyon is protected within the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness Area of the Helena National Forest.
Geography
Mann Gulch is on the east side of the Missouri River and approximately 9 miles (14 km) east of Interstate 15 (I-15), between Helena and Wolf Creek. It is 24 miles (39 km) north-northeast of Helena. It is approximately 2.4 miles (3.9 km) southeast of Beartooth Mountain.
The creek in Mann Gulch reaches the Missouri River via the Gates of the Mountains. The average elevation of Mann Gulch is 3,602 feet (1,098 m).
Meriwether Canyon is on the south, and Rescue Gulch is on the north.
History
Mann Gulch was the site of the Mann Gulch fire on August 5, 1949, in which 13 firefighters died. It was started by lightning.
The fire is the subject of the book Young Men and Fire by Norman Maclean.
