Ludwig Hammermayer (7 October 1928 – 10 October 2022) was a German historian.

Biography

Ludwig Hammermayer was born in Ingolstadt. He studied history, English and Germanistics at the University of Munich. He had study visits in Great Britain, Rome and Paris. In 1954 he received his doctorate in Munich on the founding and early history of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. From 1957 to 1962 he worked as a teacher in the school service. He received his habilitation in medieval and modern history in 1968. Hammermayer taught as professor of medieval and modern history at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 1978 until his retirement in 1991. In 2008 he received the Medal of Merit of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

His research focused on the 18th century with the conflicts of the Enlightenment in the Catholic area of southern Germany and Austria. His dissertation became the starting point for his research on the history of academies and resulted in the study Academy Movement and Scientific Organization during the Second Half of the 18th Century (1976). Another focus was the cultural relations between England and Bavaria from the 17th to the 19th century. His work on the history of the Bavarian Academy and the Illuminati Order became standard. He was considered one of the leading experts on the history of Bavaria in the 18th century. For the Handbuch der Bayerischen Geschichte, edited by Max Spindler, he wrote the article "The End of Old Bavaria, 1745–1799".
