Notes
A Kosovo is the subject of a territorial dispute between the Republic of Kosovo and the Republic of Serbia. The Republic of Kosovo unilaterally declared independence on 17 February 2008, but Serbia continues to claim it as part of its own sovereign territory. The two governments began to normalise relations in 2013, as part of the Brussels Agreement. Kosovo has been recognised as an independent state by 108 out of 193 United Nations member states.
B These entities have been consolidated into the United States Pacific Island Wildlife Refuges entry.[25]
C On April 27, 1992, Serbia and Montenegro, the final two republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), formed a new nation, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY).[61][62] Until 2001, the U.S. Government did not recognize the FRY as a state.[63] The U.S. government also decided not to accept the FRY or any the other republics as a successor state to the SFRY.[64]
