Kylie + Garibay is the second collaborative extended play by Kylie Minogue and Fernando Garibay. Credited as Kylie + Garibay, it was released on September 11, 2015 by Parlophone.[2] Kylie's official website lists the EP under the title Black and White after the lead track.[3][citation needed]

Background

In March 2014, Minogue released her twelfth studio album, Kiss Me Once through Parlophone and Warner Music Group.[4] Her first album deal with American label Roc Nation after departing from Terry Blamey Management,[5] her management since 1987, she went on her European and Australian concert tour, the Kiss Me Once Tour (2014–2015).[6][7] The tour completed in late March the following year.

In January 2015, Minogue appeared as a guest vocalist on Giorgio Moroder's single "Right Here, Right Now".[8] Then in March, Minogue's contract with Parlophone Records ended, leaving her future music releases with Warner Music Group in Australia and New Zealand.[9] The same month, she parted ways with Roc Nation "to take more control over her career."[10]

Development and composition

Kylie + Garibay is Minogue's second collaboration album with Mexican–American record producer Fernando Garibay and started recording in February 2015; their first was to promote the Kiss Me Once Tour, entitled Sleepwalker (2014).[11] After finishing the tour and recording the duet with Moroder, Minogue, alongside Garibay, requested Moroder to help produce a track for the EP. Moroder confirmed work of the EP in late January 2015 through an interview with American website Idolator, stating "She is doing another EP with our friend Fernando who did most of Lady Gaga's Born This Way." He described the songs as "very sexy and uncommercial".[12]

Originally set with four tracks, Kylie + Garibay features three tracks all co-written by Minogue. The first track, "Black and White" featuring Jamaican recording artist Shaggy experimented with UK garage and 90s techno. An accompanying video for the song directed by Katerina Jebb was released in September 2015.[13] The second track, "If I Can't Have You", features Australian recording artist Sam Sparro.[14][15] The final track, "Your Body", features guest production and vocals by Moroder. Moroder said "she asked me if I could do a little talk in Italian on her music. She wanted it really sexy, like a Latin lover – heavy breathing. I think she was quite happy. She told me: 'I should have worked with you ten years ago.'"[12] Christina Lee from Idolator, who reviewed the song from a live performance, said the song "is just as the electronic music trailblazer described: sexy, seductive and more ambient..."[16]

Promotion and release

Minogue performed the track "Your Body" at a gig performance with Moroder as the headlining act in Los Angeles, California in February 2015.[16] Despite Minogue's contract with Parlophone ending in March 2015, Kylie + Garibay was released by Parlophone on 11 September 2015 and through Warner Music Group on digital outlets and Spotify.[17][14] The extended play marked as Parlophone's final extended play release for Minogue, while Minogue's album Kylie Christmas in 2015 marked as Parlophone's album release for Minogue.[18]
