Krishnarajapuram (Railway Station Code : KJM), also known as K.R. Puram, is a suburb of Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is located 15 kilometers from Bangalore City railway station. Old Madras Road is located in Krishnarajapuram.

Krishnarajapuram is the headquarters of the Bangalore-East taluk and as such, houses a large number of government offices. It is also a Karnataka Legislative Assembly/State assembly constituency. B A Basvaraja of the Indian National Congress (INC) was elected as the Member of Legislative assembly from this constituency in the 2013 Karnataka Assembly election. It is a part of the Bangalore North Lok Sabha constituency. A lake called 'Vengayyana Lake' is in the heart of this area. The Yelemallappa Shetty lake near Medahalli, situated just outside the eastern limits of Krishnarajapuram, is one of the largest lakes in Bangalore.

K.r.puram outer ring road fly over

Krishnarajapuram is located at the junction of Old Madras Road and Outer Ring Road. Krishnarajapuram Railway station falls on the Bangalore - Chennai broad gauge line. The cable bridge on the junction of Old Madras Road and Outer Ring Road was built by Afcons for IRCON and inaugurated by then Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003 and was subsequently declared as the Most Outstanding National Bridge by the Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Krishnarajapuram had a population of 187,453. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Krishnarajapuram has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 71%. In Krishnarajapuram, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Trade

Krishnarajapuram market has its own history of 150 years. In the olden days the village common land is used for weekly market ‘Santhe’(happening on Tuesday of every week at Krishnarajapuram), which was allowed to function weekly once within the radius of 4-5 kilometers. There were around 4 acres of land for santhe.

The importance of santhe is to support the farmers to market their produce grown in their land at the local level with less transport and other costs involved in marketing, which still exists in some parts of city. The common trading was held weekly one day at different locations on different days, but at present it has become a regular market for hawkers who trade every day on the santhe place. Two major group of hawkers are still hawking in krishanarajapuram from its inception i.e. K.G.F/Bangarapet and Malur hawkers they are involved in trading dry fish, vegetables, pulses and grains etc. In the initial stage only 9 families were hawking in Krishnarajapuram market now it has been increased radically. The Krishnarajapuram panchayat auctions the santhe land to collect the tax from hawkers. The tenderer who takes the tender collects the tax of Rs.2 from each hawker and farmers. The panchayat was providing stone and sheds for the hawkers to protect the goods.

Places of interest

The Mahabaleshwara and Rama temple complex, situated adjacent to the lake, is a historic temple. Also, the Kote Venkataramana and Kashi Vishweshwara temple is a historic temple and is believed to have been built during the reign of the Ganga kings. Their chariot festival or Rathotsava is a popular fair which attracts people from many surrounding areas.

The St Anthony's Roman Catholic church has a festival on the 2nd Sunday of June.
