Chacko Murder Case
Karuvatta earned notoriety in Kerala when film representative Chacko was murdered in Karuvatta by Sukumara Kurup, the first accused and his co-accused accomplices in the sensational murder case of 1984 which shell-shocked not only Kerala's but also India's conscience. Sukumara Kurup is being hunted by the Kerala police for the past 26 years in connection with the murder of Chacko, a film representative.
The case against Kurup is that he tried to swindle insurance money totaling Rs. 8 lakhs by staging his own `death'. In order to carry out his plan, he had murdered Chacko, who bore somewhat of a resemblance to him, burnt the body and tried to pass it off as his own. Two of Kurup's co-accused are undergoing life imprisonment. Hapless Chacko who was a film representative had attended a "last show" of his company-produced-film at Hari Theater, opposite T B Clinic, Karuvatta, close to the midnight hour and was waiting for bus on the roadside when Sukumara Kurup and accomplices who were traveling in Sukumara Kurup's ambassador car noticed the resemblance, offered Chacko a lift and after murdering Chacko burned him with the car to simulate an "accidental fire" incident to claim insurance money.
The Crime Branch has sent the photographs and case particulars of Sukumara Kurup to Interpol, to try to capture him if he is absconding in a foreign country. Last 26 years of search throughout the nation unfortunately yielded no results and Sukumara Kurup is now thought to be dead or in all probability has left India.
