The Kanpur Metro is a proposed rapid transit system in the city of Kanpur, India.. The feasibility study of the project was done by RITES and was completed in June 2015. Kanpur Metro Rail is likely to be completed around 2020, if started in 2016. Kanpur is the largest city in Uttar Pradesh followed by Lucknow and Ghaziabad. This is the largest industrial town followed by Ghaziabad in the state. The feasibility study of metro rail in Kanpur has been prepared to control the traffic woes and congestion which are hampering the growth, development and prosperity of the City. On May 22, 2016, Central Government approved Metro Projects for Kanpur and Varanasi and the work is expected to begin before the end of year 2016. Japan International Cooperation Agency and European Investment Bank will provide loan to Kanpur Metro project, it will reduce pressure on the UP and the Central governments.

Corridors

Phase I

The main corridor is to be 25 km. The proposed Metro Rail route includes IIT, Kalianpur, Kanpur University, Polytechnic, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College, Moti Jhil, Harsh Nagar, Chunniganj (Lal Imli Mills), Karset Crossing (Parade), Bada Chauraha, Phool Bagh, Narona Crossing, Kanpur Central Railway Station, ISBT Jhakarkatti, Transport Nagar, Kidwai Nagar North, Kidwai Nagar Sotuh, Yashoda Nagar, Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Baudh Vihar and Naubasta. According to the plan, the metro route would begin from IIT Kalyanpur- Rawatpur, Mall Road, Phoolbagh, Kanpur Central Station, bus terminal of Jhakarkati- Kidwai Nagar - via Transport Nagar crossing- to Naubasta.On this route, 17 km track would be elevated and left 8 km would be underground. From IIT to Harsh Nagar, the route shall be elevated and from Chunniganj to ISBT Jhakarkatti via Parade, Bada Chauraha and Central Station the route will be underground.From Transport Nagar to Naubasta the track will be elevated. A 10-km secondary corridor with 8 stations is also being though of. It would begin from Chandrashekhar Azad Agricultural University via GSVM Government Medical College- via CTI Chauraha,Govind Nagar Road- Fazalganj Chouraha to Vijay Nagar crossing to Barra 7 via Barra Road.From CSA to Double Pulia via Kakadev and Rawatpur Station, the route will be underground while from Double Pulia to Barra 7 the route will be elevated

Phase II

In this phase the metro line is proposed from IIT to Jajmau in eastern part of the city via Kalianpur and ISBT Jhakarkatti.

Cost

Cost of construction is estimated at Rs 350 crore per km. The cost will be evaluated based on the June 2015 price index.

Status updates

  • Nov 2015: DPR prepared by LMRC and RITES is submitted to state government.[1]
  • Feb 2016: State Government is planning to lay foundation stone of Kanpur Metro in March 2016 after state cabinet approval.[2]
