Occupation Actor

John Stuart, born John Alfred Louden Croall (18 July 1898 – 17 October 1979), was a Scottish actor, and a very popular leading man in British silent films in the 1920s. He appeared in two films directed by Alfred Hitchcock.[1]

He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.[1]

His first talkie Kitty (1929) was a successful production. His last role was in the film Superman (1978), as a Kryptonian elder.[2]

He is buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.[3]

His son Jonathan Croall is writing a book about the screen idols of the 1920s, including John Stuart. In a Guardian article 11 February 2012, "My dad, the silent film star", Jonathan Croall writes a tribute to his father, which offers much personal and professional background.[4][5][6]
