Jamie Mathiou (born in Queensland, Australia) is a former professional rugby league footballer of the 1990s and 2000s. An Ireland international forward, he played for Australian clubs, the North Sydney Bears and the North Queensland Cowboys, and for English club, the Leeds Rhinos.

Playing career

While attending Kingscliff High School, Mathiou played for the Australian Schoolboys team in 1989.

Mathiou played for the North Sydney Bears and North Queensland Cowboys in Australia and Leeds Rhinos in the European Super League. His position of choice was as a prop.

Mathiou played 136 games for Leeds, starting 100 from the bench. He became the longest serving import for Leeds Rhinos since the change of import rules in 1982. He played for Leeds from the interchange bench in their 1998 Super League Grand Final loss to Wigan Warriors.

Mathiou was an Ireland international and played at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup.

Later years

After retiring from Leeds, Mathiou played with and captained the Ipswich Jets in the Queensland Cup competition. Later he worked in recruitment for the Sydney Roosters for ten years. He joined the Gold Coast Titans in 2015 as the recruitment manager, spending only a year at the club.
