The administrative centre of Sør-Fron, Oppland, Hundorp was also the centre of the petty kingdom of Gudbrandsdal and as such important in religion and politics. Dale-Gudbrands gard, the farm once populated by the ancient ruler Dale-Gudbrand, is the so-called millennial location of Oppland.
The name
The Norse form of the name was Hundþorp. The first element is hundr 'great, rich, powerful', the last element is þorp 'farm'. The name is probably reflecting the fact that this was the seat of a king.
