Campus
The Campus is a fairly standard indoor campus with several classrooms that can be entered from the outside. The High School also has a new auditorium and athletic center. Up until May 2002, Hobbs freshmen went to one of three junior high schools: Highland, Houston, and Heizer. All three schools housed 7th through 9th grade. The decision was made to convert Heizer Junior High School into a freshman high school to help transition 9th grade students into high school curriculum and behavioral expectations. Heizer was chosen because of its ability to expand, being surrounded by an open field. Both Highland and Houston were surrounded by housing and other problems that would have prevented expansions.
Until the summer of 2011, the freshmen were either bussed or transported to the campus, which drew the ire of many parents because of its location in the extreme southern location of Hobbs. After a few years of discussion, the Hobbs Municipal Schools Board if Education decided that the best way to transition the freshmen to high school would be to build what would be known as the Hobbs Freshman High School (HFHS) next to the existing high school. The first freshman class at the new school entered in August 2011. Heizer, meanwhile, returned to being a junior high school.
School song
In the west mid dark oil derricks
Friendly flares to view
Stands the best of noble high schools
Hobbs High heres to you
Watch the night flares and send a radiance
And a grand Hello
Golden land of all that's worthwhile
Hobbs, New Mexico!!!!
Mascot and colors
The mascot of Hobbs High School is the Eagles and the colors are primarily black and gold, with white being a secondary color. One of the more prominent features of the campus is the eagle on a globe statue outside the front of the campus, facing Jefferson Street. Over the years, students from rival high schools have repeatedly painted this statue in their own colors as a prank.
Athletics
HHS competes in the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA), as a class 6A school in District 4. In 2014, the NMAA realigned the state's schools in to six classifications and adjusted district boundaries.[1] In addition to Hobbs High School, the schools in District 4-6A include Carlsbad High School, Clovis High School and Alamogordo High School.[2]
Hobbs High School has a total of 42 state titles[citation needed] and competes in a wide variety of sports as the Eagles and Lady Eagles, which include:
- Tennis - Eagle tennis.
- Volleyball - Lady Eagle volleyball.
- Football - 2-time state championship-winning Eagle football. The Eagles play their home games at Watson Memorial Stadium. The Eagles acquired head coach Bruce Dollar from Carlsbad High School, where he was serving as the athletic director. Players wear a variety of jerseys both at home and on the road, with black and gold being worn at home and white being usee for road games. The Eagles have black helmets with an H logo and a stylized eagle on the inside.
- Basketball - The basketball team is the one of the most successful in the state, with 17 overall state championships. Hobbs has an intense rivalry with Clovis High School especially during basketball games, with crowds often rivaling many college venues. The most recent state championship win against Clovis came in 2008, with the Eagles facing the Wildcats at The Pit, home of the New Mexico Lobos, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
- Baseball and Softball - Eagle Baseball and Softball is very competitive in district against the Carlsbad Cavemen and the Clovis Wildcats.
- Swimming and Diving - Hobbs has a swimming and diving team.
- Wrestling - Eagle Wrestling is very competitive in district as well as at the state level.
