Griffith College Cork is an independent education institution based in the former Skerry's College Cork which it merged with Griffith College in 2005, where it runs courses in Business, Law, Secretarial, Media & Journalism, Design as well as evening courses in Psychology, Office Skills, Computing and development and training Courses.
Most of the undergraduate degree courses are validated by HETAC and a number of them require application via the Irish CAO system. The LLB(Hons) in Irish Law is jointly validated by HETAC & Nottingham Trent University.[1]
The Journalism & Media postgraduate course is validated by HETAC.
Full-time undergraduate HETAC level 6, 7 & 8 courses were also validated to receive tax relief under the Irish Governments 1997 Act.[2][3]
In August 2009 Griffith College Cork moved from its Patrick's Hill buildings to a new location Cove Street, Sullivan's Quay, Cork, Co. Cork.[4]
In 2014 the college moved to its new, permanent location occupying the former Marymount Hospice on Wellington Road, overlooking the city.
Courses
Accountancy
Since 2000 there is also a division of the college which provides Professional Accountancy training in Drinan St., Cork [1] for the ACCA, CIMA, IATI and CPA accountancy bodies. Griffith College has been appointed as an ACCA registered CPD/CPE provider.[5] IATI,[6] CIMA Certificate in Business and ACCA Certified Accounting Technician courses are also run at the Cove St. College which is an ACCA Gold status Approved Learning Partner.
The ACCA has awarded Griffith College Cork the Platinum accreditation – the highest recognition by the ACCA[7] and the college has also achieved the goldStar Approved Educator status from the CPA.[8]
Computer based exams(CBE) are available in Griffith College Cork for the ACCA, and CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting.
From 2009 the Griffith College Cork Team will also run its ACCA course in Griffith College Limerick.
Business
The college runs a variety of HETAC validated level 7 and 8 Degrees in Business Studies, Marketing and Accountancy & Finance as well as HETAC Certificates in Business Studies, Intercultural Studies and Travel & Tourism.
Law
The LLB(Hons) in Irish law is jointly accredited by HETAC and Nottingham Trent University, England and this is recognised by the King's Inns for entry to its Degree of Barrister-at-Law which is a professional qualification for practice at the bar,[9] it also enables graduates who wish to qualify as solicitors to sit the Law Society of Ireland’s entrance examinations. The Professional Law school runs the highly successful Preparatory Course for the Law Society Final Entrance Examinations(FE1) in Cork delivered via Video Link. Last year the 8 out of 9 of the Law Society prizes were won by Griffith College students two of these had done the FE1 course in Griffith College Cork.
The Preparatory Course for the Entrance Examination for the King's Inns is available from Griffith by distance learning, in 2008 it was available as a taught course. The College also runs the IILEX Certificate and Diploma in Legal Studies.[10]
In 2009 Griffith will launch its Law Masters programme, LLM in International Law, this has three separate streams, in International Law, Human Rights Law and Commercial Law, and is validated by Nottingham Trent University.
Media & Journalism
The College runs an undergraduate BA in Journalism(HETAC), and a new Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Journalism & Media Communications(HETAC). Postgraduate and 2nd year Journalism students get on-air experience of radio running the Student Radio station Griff FM 106.7Mhz. This year GriffFM broadcasts from 15–19 February inclusive[11] Students also produced the student newspaper Leemail. BA and Higher Diploma journalism students are entitled to apply for a student NUJ Card for each year of their studies. Amongst its lecturers are figures in local radio and print journalism.[12] GCC has also run short evening courses in Creative Music Technology and Writing Drama for Radio.
In 2008 two new media courses will be run in the evening in Professional Video Editing with Final Cut Pro and a Certificate in Journalism. modules of this certificate are certified under HETAC's ACCS scheme.
Having previous a Higher Diploma, commencing in September 2009 there is a new Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Journalism & Media Communications(HETAC).
Design
The college runs a BTEC Higher National Diploma in Interior Architecture & Design and a Limperts Academy Diploma in Interior Design & Decoration.[13] A number of its tutors are active working in the industry as designers.[14]
Music & Drama
In 2008 the Leinster School of Music & Drama a constituent School of Griffith College at Griffith College Cork are running the Higher Diploma in Arts in Music Education(HETAC) as well the Leinster Schools Associate and Licentiate programmes as Certificates in Music Education which are certified under HETAC's Accumulation of Credits and Certification of Subjects scheme (ACCS).
Secretarial School
The Diploma in Administration and Office Skills, trains administration and secretarial staff for employment as the college has done as Skerrys for over Sixty years with Pitman and City & Guilds office skills courses. The Office Skills course trains students in the use of Microsoft Office and SAGE payroll packages.
Evening Courses
Some 700 students last year participated in evening programmes run in Griffith College Cork. There are a number of professional courses in business as well as psychology offered which are validated by ICM, City & Guilds, SAGE, ECDL/EUCIP, Pitman, JEB/EDI[disambiguation needed] courses, and a number of evening Law and Media courses in Creative Music Technology and Writing Drama for Radio. Griffith College Cork as skerrys had done as well runs a number of Computing Skills courses such as Web Design, Microsoft Certified Programmes, CISCO and CompTia, and also has run electronics, networking and programming courses (e.g. Java, J2EE and C programming). The ACCA Certified Accounting Technician(CAT) is run from the Patrick's hill college. In 2008 a number of new courses will be run in the evening, Project Management, CIMA Certificate in Business, Certificate in journalism, Professional Video Editing, ECDL Update and ECDL advanced Courses.
Short Courses
There are also a number of Short Term Day courses run at GCC.
Facilities and Services
Library
The College Library holds an extensive range of set course texts and background reading material for all college programmes GCC has access to a number of on-line databases including Lexis-Nexis, Westlaw and BSP. Also the online elearning platform moodle is used by the college, for providing course material to students.
Computing
The College's four computer laboratories contain 70 fully networked workstations. Printing and photocopying facilities are available to students in the Openlab.
Studio & Student Radio Station
The college has a fully equipped radio station and studio, for use by the Journalism and Media students. In students from the media faculty will broadcast a radio station for a week in March. Griffith College Cork's Student radio station Griff FM 106.7 broadcasts on a Temporary Licence from the BCI on 106.7 MHz FM[15] Broadcasting from 16 to 20 February 2009, it was also relayed online Griff FM 106.7Mhz.[16]
Placement
GCC offers a Career Placement Service, as the college did as Skerrys in the past, for its students throughout the Cork and Munster area.
Graduation
Graduation ceremony, for the academic programmes each November, these ceremonies have been attended by family and friends of graduates as well as representatives of the validation bodies (HETAC, NTU, IILEX, ICM, Limpert's Academy and ACCA) and local elected representatives. The College also presents prizes for Evening Student of the Year and HETAC Student of the Year at this ceremony. For some of the other Professional programmes such as IATI, CPA and CIMA separate ceremonies take place.
The 2010 Graduation took place on 5 November in Cork City Hall. The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Tadhg O'hÉalaithe (HETAC), the Lord Mayor Councilor Michael O'Connell, Lady Mayoress Catherine O'Connell, Mr. Frank Crummey (IILEX) as well as the students' families, friends and relatives. College President gave the conferring address, and prizes were awarded to students for Best academic achievement in each faculty. It was also the first year for MA in Journalism and BA(Hons) in Accounting & Finance graduates.
The 2009 graduation ceremony took place in Cork City Hall, with over 170 students graduated from 14 different courses, in attendance was the Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Dara Murphy and Lady Mayoress Tanya Murphy. The ceremony seen the first BA in Journalism(HETAC) and part-time LLB(Hons) in Irish Law(HETAC/NTU) students graduate from Griffith College Cork.[17]
The 2008 Graduation ceremony took place as it had done for the a number of years, in St. Fin Barre's Cathedral, and was attended by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork, Jim Corr, this year's ceremony included the first graduates from the LLB(Hons) in Irish Law(HETAC/HTU) and from the postgraduate Higher Diploma in Journalism and Media Communications(HETAC).
