History
Griffin Mills was originally a milling site named Smith's Mills, purchased by Abram Smith around 1807.[3] A grist mill was also erected in 1809 by Humphrey Smith. Other industry included tanneries built in 1829 and 1843, a store, a saw mill, a tavern, a distillery, a brick hotel, and an ashery. A few physicians resided in the area, as well as other merchants. The West Aurora Congregational Church was erected on August 18, 1810 with nine members, and was later converted to a Presbyterian church. Two other churches were founded in 1850 and 1868.[3]
In 1898, the village contained just two stores and a grist mill.[3]
