George Weldon was the Deputy Governor of Bombay in 1690. He died during his voyage back to England and was buried in Mauritius in 1697. His widow erected such a fine monument on his grave that it served as a landmark for shipping for many years. Its location thus became known as Baie du Tombeau (Tomb Bay).
