Ferdous Ara is a Bangladeshi Nazrul Sangeet singer.[3][4]

Early life and education

Ara was born in Brahmanbaria District to her parents A.H.M. Abdul Hai, a classical singer of the early 1950s, and Mosharrefa Begum.[1][2] Her nickname is Marine.[1]

Ara completed her BA (Honours) and MA in History from University of Dhaka.[2]

Career

In 1973, Ara started her career as a regular vocal artist in Bangladesh Radio and afterward in Bangladesh Television. She has released many song albums.[2]

She also sings Adhunik and patriotic songs. She teaches Nazrul songs at the Nazrul Institute. Besides, she contributed as a background vocal in films, documentaries, and drama. She sang in a movie titled, Meher Nigar by Impress Telefilm.

She sang at the Gala Concert at Royal Albert Hall, London on an invitation of Inner London Education Authority in 1986. She also performed in Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.[2]

Personal life

Ara is married to Rafiqul Mohammed, a government officer. She has a son, Faysal Mohammed and a daughter, Fahmi Ferdous.[2]

She was a champion in the inter-college competition. She was a fan of the Russian gymnastic star Nadia Comăneci in her college life. She also used to love boxing. She is also passionate about history.[1]

Other activities

She wrote few books. Sangeet Bhubaney Nazrul (Nazrul in Music World) and Sanchitar Katha Barta (Conversation of Sanchita) are one of them. She also hosts Sanchita on Channel i and Ei Shomoy on nTV, both are program about Nazrul. Ferdous Ara is an instructor of Nazrul Institute and runs a music school named Sursaptak.

Awards

Ara was awarded Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Gold Medal.[2]
