Walter J. "Duke" Nelson (April 26, 1907 – October 22, 1989) was the head football coach for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers and Middlebury College Panthers football teams. He coached RPI from 1939 to 1941 and Middlebury from 1946 to 1968. Nelson's overall coaching record is 98–81–12, including back-to-back Vermont State Conference championships in 1948 and 1949 while coaching the Panthers.
