Derrick Pumaren
Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. Frederick S. Pumaren, better known as Derick Pumaren, is a Filipino basketball coach.
Career
Derick Pumaren was a member of the UE Red Warrior 1978 and 1979 Championship Teams, PBA Consultant, and a National Team Coach. He also was former team consultant for the UE Red Warriors in the UAAP during the coaching tenure of his younger brother Dindo Pumaren from UAAP Season 68 to Season 71.[1]
Pumaren became a head coach for the De La Salle Green Archers in the UAAP from the late 80s to the early 90s. He was also a successful head coach in the Philippine Amateur Basketball League, later shortened to Philippine Basketball League, with the Magnolia franchise and Triple-V Restaurant. He served as an assistant coach under head coach Norman Black from 1987-1990 with the San Miguel Beermen, which won the Grand Slam in 1989. He left to become the head coach of Pepsi and went on to coach Sunkist, Sta. Lucia Realtors, Purefoods Carne Norte Beefies, FedEx Express, and Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters in the Philippine Basketball Association. Currently, he acts as a team consultant for the UE Red Warriors in the UAAP. In 2008 he was replaced by Chot Reyes as the coach for Talk 'N Text.[2]
The Pumaren Family
- His father is Pilo Pumaren (Former UE Red Warrior), who also served as an assistant coach under Norman Black to the San Miguel Beermen. His father Pilo eventually became the head coach of the team in 1998. He also played for the UE Red Warriors.
- He has two younger brothers who were both PBA players whom he had coached: Franz Pumaren (former UE Pages), who played for the San Miguel Beermen and Mobiline Phone Pals, he later inherited Derrick's head coaching duties in the UAAP and the PBL, and Dindo Pumaren, who played for Purefoods TJ Hotdogs and Pepsi, former Head Coach of the UE Red Warriors and DLSU Green Archers in the UAAP.
