During World War II, the German Wehrmacht accepted many different types and formations of foreign volunteers. Some were motivated by anti-communism; others were encouraged by Germany to dream of local nationalist movements. Other examples ranged from captured soldiers offered an alternative to incarceration in a POW camp; conscripts; or even criminals given the power to pacify occupied terrorities.
