The museum closed temporarily on February 28, 2014 and will be moving to a new location in the State Library, Archives and Museum (SLAM) building that is scheduled to open in 2016.[1] The original building, designed by Linn A. Forrest,[2] was demolished in August 2014.

The museum's collections include cultural materials from the people of the Northwest Coast (Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian), artifacts from the state's Russian colonial and pioneer eras, state history, fine art, natural history, industry and trades.[3]
