25 Gigabit Ethernet
25 Gigabit Ethernet (25GbE) and 50 Gigabit Ethernet (50GbE) are proposed standards for Ethernet connectivity in a datacenter environment, developed by IEEE 802.3 task forces P802.3by and 802.3cd.
An industry consortium (25G Ethernet Consortium [1]) was formed in July 2014 to support the specification of single-lane 25Gb Ethernet and dual-lane 50Gb Ethernet technology. The 25G Ethernet Consortium specification draft was completed in September 2015 and uses technology from IEEE Std. 802.3ba and IEEE Std. 802.bj.
In November 2014, an IEEE 802.3 task force was formed to develop a single-lane 25Gb standard,[2][3] and in November 2015, a study group was formed to explore the development of a single-lane 50Gb standard.[4]
The IEEE 802.3 draft standard uses technology defined for 100 Gigabit Ethernet implemented as four 25-Gbit/s lanes (IEEE 802.3bj).[5][6] The IEEE P802.3by task force[7] with the objectives to define:[8]
- a single-lane 25 Gbit/s 25GBASE-KR PHY for printed circuit backplanes
- a single-lane 25 Gbit/s 25GBASE-CR-S PHY for 3 m twin-ax cables (in-rack)
- a single-lane 25 Gbit/s 25GBASE-CR-L PHY for 5 m twin-ax cables (inter-rack)
- a single-lane 25 Gbit/s 25GBASE-SR PHY for 100 m OM4 or 70 m OM3 multi-mode optical fiber
Adopted IEEE P802.3by schedule has a planned approval date of September 2016 for the IEEE 802.3by standard.[9] However IEEE P802.3by Task Force expects the standard in June 2016 with regard to current trajectory.[10]
Based on the 2nd Sponsor recirculation ballot on the amendment IEEE P802.3by 25 Gb/s Ethernet closing with 100% approval and no comments IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group have submitted the project to RevCom for consideration at their 29th June 2016 meeting.[11] If RevCom recommends approval, and the IEEE-SA Standards Board votes to accept that recommendation the following day, IEEE 802.3by 25 Gb/s Ethernet will become an IEEE standard on Thursday 30th June 2016.[12]
25GBASE-T, a 25 Gbit/s standard over twisted pair, is being developed alongside 40GBASE-T within IEEE 802.3bq.[13]
