The 1973-74 NBA season was the 76ers 25th season in the NBA and 11th season in Philadelphia. Although the team did improve from a league history worst 9 wins to 25 wins, an even greater loss occurred in the draft after the season, when the team lost a coin flip with the Portland Trial Blazers for the #1 overall pick. The Blazers used this pick to select Bill Walton of UCLA. The 76ers picking second selected Marvin Barnes out of Providence. Bill Walton would win league MVP and a title with Portland, and Barnes never played a single game with the Sixers, opting for the ABA.
Fred Carter was the teams leading scorer who averaged over 20 points a game, and Doug Collins was a rookie on this squad, who was the Number one overall draft choice from Illinois State in the 1973 draft. [1]
