The Çanakkale 1915 Bridge (Turkish: 1915 Çanakkale Köprüsü), also known as the Dardanelles Bridge (Turkish: Çanakkale Boğaz Köprüsü), is a road suspension bridge in the Province of Çanakkale in northwestern Turkey. Situated just south of the towns of Lapseki and Gelibolu, the bridge spans the Dardanelles strait, about 10 km (6.2 mi) south of the Sea of Marmara.[4]
The bridge is the centerpiece of a planned 321 km (199 mi) long US$2.8 billion Kınalı-Balıkesir Motorway, which will connect the O-3 and O-7 motorways in East Thrace to the O-5 motorway in Anatolia. With a main span of 2,023 m (6,637 ft), the bridge surpassed the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan by 32 m (105 ft) to become the longest suspension bridge in the world.[5]
Design
The bridge was designed by Tekfen[1] and T-ingénierie COWI A/S.[6]
The total length of the bridge is 3,563 m (11,690 ft) and together with the approach viaducts the length reaches 4,608 m (15,118 ft), which surpasses the total length of the Osman Gazi Bridge and its approach viaducts by 527 m (1,729 ft), to become the longest bridge of any type in Turkey.[7]
The total height of the bridge's two towers is 318 m (1,043 ft) tall, making it the second tallest bridge in Turkey, after the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, and the third tallest structure in the country. Internationally, the bridge is the sixth tallest bridge in the world, surpassing the Sutong Bridge in China. The deck of the bridge is 72.8 m (239 ft) high and has a total width of 45.06 m (147.8 ft) and a maximum thickness of 3.5 m (11 ft). The deck carries six lanes of motorway (three in each direction), together with two walkways on each side for maintenance.[7]
History
On 16 May 2020, the second tower was completed, on the Gallipoli side (European coast).[8] By 13 November 2021 all block decks were achieved.[9] The toll bridge opened for traffic on 18 March 2022, at a price of 200 lira (€12.20).[citation needed]
Symbolic figures
Some symbolic figures are associated with the bridge. The number 1915 in the name, the height of the towers (318 m),[10] and the groundbreaking date (18 March) are related to the Turkish Naval Victory on 18 March 1915 during the naval operations in the Gallipoli Campaign. The length of the bridge's main span, 2023 meters, refers to the centennial of the Turkish Republic in 2023.[5]
