List of Roman consuls

Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. This is a list of Roman consuls, the highest elected political office of the Roman Republic and a high office of the Empire. If the emperor was consul, it was the highest office; if not, it was a high administrative office and remained the basis of marking time in the fasti.
For the early Roman Republic this article observes the Varronian chronology, first presented by Marcus Terentius Varro, in which Year 1 AUC becomes 754–753 BC (the Roman year was split over two modern years). The first year of the republic is 245 AUC, or 509–508 BC. This chronology came to widely accepted; in ancient times it was used in the Fasti Capitolini, and its use by Censorinus brought it to the attention of Julius Caesar Scaliger, whose adoption in creating a scientific chronology of ancient times made it familiar and widespread in modern times.[1] However, other ancient sources for the list of Roman Republican consuls provide different dates for both the Founding of Rome, and for names of consuls.[2]
The dates of ordinary consuls is far more certain for the Imperial period; however, because suffect consuls were not recorded with the same attention as ordinary consuls (after whom the years were named), their identification and dating is far more controversial, and despite the efforts of generations of scholars, gaps in coverage remain.
For those individuals who served as Consul (usually Suffect, but some of the consuls in the breakaway Gallic Empire lack dates[3]), but whose period in office is uncertain, see List of undated Roman consuls.
For those individuals who were elected to the office of Consul but never actually served due to death, disgrace, or any other reason prior to the commencement of their term, see List of Roman consuls designate.

vacatio According to Livy (6.35), the tribunes Gaius Licinius Stolo and Lucius Sextius introduced new laws concerning debt reform, a limit to how much public lands one man might hold, and to restore the consulate with one consul being reserved for the plebians. This provoked strong resistance from the patricians. Licinius Stolo and Sextius resorted to using the tribunican veto to prevent either consuls or consular tribunes to be elected for five years. However, modern scholars strongly doubt that this happened, and the consensus instead is that the fasti for the fourth century was discovered to be missing 5 sets of eponymous magistrates. One solution for this omission was to insert four years without these magistrates; the other was to invent a series of fictional consuls; a third was to insert a number of dictator years. Unfortunately, the Varronian chronology added both a four year period without eponymous magistrates and four years of dictator years.[12] | |||

- ↑ So Dionysius of Halicarnassus (V.36.1) and others. Livy II.15.1, however, names another pair: P. Lucretius and P. Valerius Poplicola. Alan Samuel explains this difference as Lucretius being an error for Larcius, due to confusion with Poplicola's colleague in 508 and 504 BC. (Samuel, Greek and Roman Chronology (Muenchen: Beck'sche, 1972), p. 256)
- ↑ So the Fasti Capitolini. Diodorus Siculus XI.52.1 names C. Cornelius Lentulus as the colleague of Mamercus (Samuel, Greek and Roman Chronology, p. 256)
- ↑ so Dionysius of Halicarnassus (IX.37.2) and Fasti Capitolini, which Livy admits is an alternative to the man he names as Mamercus' colleague, Opet. Verginius (II.54.3). Diodorus Siculus (XI.65.1) names L. Stoudios Iulius as Mamercus' colleague. (Samuel, Greek and Roman Chronology, p. 256)
- ↑ So Livy III.25.1, Diodorus XI.88.1, and others; however the Fasti Capitolini makes him suffect consul and puts Carve[tus] or Carve[ntanus] in his place. (Samuel, Greek and Roman Chronology, p. 256)

Drummond has persuasively argued that they are the introduction of the antiquarian Titus Pomponius Atticus (whose work is better known as the Varronian Chronology, which was adopted by the Fasti Capitolini) both to fix the synchonization of the Battle of Allia to 390 BC, and to provide precedent for Julius Caesar's use of annual dictatorships.
