Summary
The George Hotel, Huddersfield This imposing building facing St. George's Square in front of the station occupies a unique place in sporting history, because it was here in 1895 that representatives of some eighteen Rugby football clubs met, and resolved to break away from the Rugby Football Union and form their own separate Northern Rugby Football Union, which later became the Rugby Football League. The dispute with the RFU was over payment for 'broken time' when players had to be absent from work in order to play. It was specifically NOT about professionalism, as has been so mis-represented by Rugby Union interests over the years.
