Article | |
Portion used |
Complete, to maintain integrity and sense of original design. |
Low resolution? |
Yes |
Purpose of use |
To illustrate Reid's most pivotal work and one of his most famous. The image is used for explication of sourced critical commentary on the item depicted and the significant visual content of the image itself, a Union Flag defaced in a unique fashion (Source: Savage, Jon (1992). England's Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock, and Beyond, p. 253. St. Martin's. ISBN 0312087748). It was Reid's first widely disseminated design for the Sex Pistols, and was the work most responsible for establishing the aesthetic that would come to define punk rock for decades to come (Source: Pardo, Alona (2004). "Jamie Reid", in Communicate: Independent British Graphic Design Since the Sixties, ed. Rick Poyner, p. 24. Yale University Press. ISBN 030010684X). The use of the image in this location and context makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone. |
Replaceable? |
Given the nature of the poster and the circumstances of its design, any comparable image would be similarly under copyright, so no free image plausibly exists or could exist that would be a valid replacement. |

Fair use in Punk rock
This image of a record poster is being linked here; though it is subject to copyright, I DCGeist believe it meets with Wikipedia's fair use image policy for use in this article because:
- it is a low-resolution reproduction;
- it does not limit the copyright owner's rights to sell the record or the poster in any way;
- it does not interfere with the copyright owner's ability to promote the record in any way;
- it is being used only for informational purposes; and
- its inclusion adds significantly to the article because it illustrates the groundbreaking single by the trendsetting British punk band as detailed in the accompanying text (the actual single cover was a "plain shiny black bag"--see Savage, England's Dreaming [1991], p. 253)
