The Anugerah Musik Indonesia (English translation: Indonesian Music Awards), also known as AMI or colloquially AMI Awards is an annual Indonesian major music awards. They have been compared to the American Grammy Awards, and British Brit Awards.

History

The awards were formalized as the Indonesian Music Awards in 1997 as a joint project between ASIRI (Recording Industry Association of Indonesia), PAPPRI (Singers, Songwriters, and Music Record Producers Association of Indonesia), and KCI (Copyright Office of Indonesia).[1]

Organization

Each of the three founding organizations originally contributed one board member, under the direction of Indonesian country singer, Tantowi Yahya. Under this board was another, less powerful board. There are afterwards further divisions based on specialty, including Marketing, Communication, and Membership.[1]

Award categories

The Anugerah Musik Indonesia are awarded in several categories, each of which isolate a specific contribution to music. Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) categories have been added and removed over time.[2] The 2010 awards had 35 categories,[1] while the 2011 awards had 46.[2] Awards are given to the best contributions in different musical genres. The general awards include several awards not restricted by musical genre:

  • "Best of the Best Newcomer"
  • "Best of the Best Album"
  • "Best of the Best Production Work"
Production Support category
  • "Best Recording Album Producer"
  • "Best Graphic Design Album"
  • "Best Mix Engineer"

The Anugerah Musik Indonesia also presents some special awards such as an annual Lifetime Achievement Award and an award for the best foreign artist.[3][4]

Dates and venues

The Anugerah Musik Indonesia has been held continuously every year since 1997, except in 2007, when poor organization led to the event being cancelled. The AMI Dangdut Awards were held that year as a replacement. The event was held at Taman Ismail Marzuki held in 1997, 1998, and 1999, and at the Jakarta Convention Center in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006.
